IMG_3057 The Alexander McQueen exhibit: Savage Beauty at Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC

I have been dreading to go to Met to see Savage Beauty as whoever went to the exhibit said, “It’s so popular you need to be in the line for so long like hours then it’s too crowded that it’s hard to see all in detail!”  But regardless, I knew it was going to be amazing. ” Exhibit will make you cry!”  that’s what I heard a lot too.  I was lucky enough to get free private access to the Museum this Monday through a friend at the museum as the Museum is closed on Mondays. But due to the high demand of this show, Museum had introduced ” Met Mondays with McQueen” starting from June 6. And it will cost you hefty $50.00 entrance fee but I highly recommend it otherwise not sure how you can say you really saw the exhibition with all that big crowd. And very nice audio tour ( narrated by Andrew Bolton, Sara Jessica Parker, Philip Treacy and more!) is on the house with this special Monday tour I believe.

Last Year,  The 40 years of YSL Retrospective at Paris was amazing, beautiful and unbelievable. But still it stayed in fashion. Beautiful clothing with impeccable workmanship in beautiful setting.  But Savage Beauty definitely felt closer to an art exhibit. McQueen’s fashion surpasses countless Artists’ art out there today. And I like to pay a huge credit to Mr. Andrew Bolton, the curator of this exhibit and Costume Institute who handled many years’ yearly gala. I had a privilege to work with him personally on a small project related to the last year’s Gala, American women as Gap was major sponsor to the exhibit.

And Mr. Bolton, you’ve had beautifully executed Savage Beauty to translate Alexander McQueen’s dark, strong, complex and bold approach to his artful inner world.  The rooms were perfectly McQueen. The lighting, the materials of the wall, the music and utterly dark and chick showcases and the stage. I absolutely loved it. The Colors in the room, runway clips, the most amazing head and shoulder pieces, the materials of the setting… I could go on and on about this. It felt beautifully expensive and perfectly regal but also completely modern and dare futuristic. Just like who Alexander McQueen was.

IMG_3048The entrance!  Red tinted microscopic glass pieces and ostrich feather dress on the left and the infamous Razor clam shell dress on the right. It kills me.  I highly recommend you to get the Audio tour. You get to hear stories behind from actual people who worked on or worn the actual pieces.

IMG_3209

IMG_3051The first room,  ”The Romantic Mind”, is dedicated to the tailored and mostly jacket pieces.  Lots of these pieces were landed by the actual owners for the exhibit.  McQueen’s Savile Row in London’s tailoring experience is showing through these pieces. Only showing a few pieces here.

IMG_3114The washed concrete wall and naive wood flank is familiar contrast we see everyday now but again it works beautifully against McQueen’s impeccable hard tailoring.

I only have a few pictures from the Savage Beauty in this post. You need to see All in person. It ends on August 7. So hurry up!

It was truly one of the most amazing exhibitions I have seen. Not just McQueen itself but the whole package, it is a great exhibition.  Also excellent  website.

And NEVER TO MISS, click on THIS to watch clips of McQueen’s runway shows.

IMG_3034Ana’s gorgeous Raw Creation, Dates and Raisin Pecan pie with Edible flowers! So smart! So delicious! And So Raw!

It was So So So nice to have spent some descent time with Keith and Ana again! It has been so long since the last time we hung out together, which I honestly don’t even remember when exactly that was. A year? or More?  The fact that Keith and Ana getting on this raw food journey they have chose for a more than a year now actually somehow distanced us physically a bit because we used to meet up and have quite a cook offs together. Ana will chop, Keith will peel and Emi will stir and simmer. For hours and many nights. I’ll say the food-ing definitely bonded us.  Apart from many interests we have in common or not in common as we all are quite eccentric if you would call it. Art and Design for sure and crush on certain crazy artists and musicians we share. Nothing wrong about eating cooked food but as Ana was sort of suffering a bit with indigestion and maybe even some allergies as many of us do. Like wheat, dairy and so on.

Keith and Ana were always healthy eaters, but complete change to Eating only raw food sounded quite extreme to me I have to say. I mean what would it be like? Would it be boring? Do you only eat leaves and carrots? Will you be hungry sometimes?  How are you going to eat beans? They usually come dry. You know what I mean? I had asked myself many times what it would be really like even though I am completely ” IN” for the idea just imagining how raw food will sort of clean your system and my quite “well bred common food knowledge” as an Korean especially grown up with my family like grandma, aunt and my mom who all are absolute sort of food freaks making everything from scratch in such healthy way. I mean I had already mastered what specific colors of food group really means to your body by when I was like 8 years old. It was so common my mom and aunt will call out what is what and how you should prepare them not to waste any nutrition. Then there was the master of masters,  my grandma making everything at home from Tofu to facial moisturizer.

Thursday dinner with Keith And Ana had answered me great deal of my curiosity about eating raw food. It opened my eyes bit about creating your own food culture in very healthy ways and I also realized it would ask quite a bit of creativity and food brain. And surely being open minded.

IMG_3010Flax seed and Zucchini flat bread. Keith and Ana use great deal of food dehydrator and processor to create certain textures and consistencies. This bread was prepared by using a dehydrator.  My verdict? It has great bite to it and has really nice nutty flavor. I am a nut lover, so anything nutty, I love!

IMG_3019Ana prepping a starter. Avocado mousse with dried porcini mushroom. It’s packed with flavor and supper fluffy. It melts in your mouth! A kick from Cayenne pepper is really nice too.

IMG_3020Drizzle of olive oil and fresh black pepper at serving. This was quite filling I didn’t t finish it up.

IMG_3012Cherry tomato and Zucchini salad.

IMG_3014Anna called it rice. It’s actually finely chopped parsnip and pine nuts and seasoning. This got that rice like texture. It’s satisfying like you are having cooked carbohydrate like potato or rice. It has quite intense flavor. I don’t know why I always thought raw food would not have same level of flavor as cooked food. I was totally wrong about it. Raw food actually tends to have more flavor as you are eating the ingredient raw as it is.  There’s no hiding. That straight up flavor is quite impressive.

IMG_3015Simple tomato salsa. Nice one!

IMG_3023So we are building sort of Open sandwich like.  Bread, then spread ” Cashew nut spread :blend the Cashew with bit of water, salt, olive oil, onion or what ever other flavor you would like to add, this comes out super creamy and naturally bit sweet, You know my mom has been making this instead of using Mayo!!  Then add Cherry tomato and Zucchini salad on top. And Ana had also other couple toppings like chopped olives and simple bell peppers.  You build however you like. This open sandwich is SO DELICIOUS! Every ingredients come through nicely with it’s own honest flavor. It’s super refreshing. It’s clean and delicious!

IMG_3021No Not red wine.  Keith and Ana stopped drinking when they started Raw food. This is hibiscus flower tee. Earthy and strong. It’s quite great.

IMG_3024We chatted and chatted. It’s great time we were having!  And Ana totally surprises me pulling this fabulous raw number for dessert! Isn’t it so gorgeous?!!!

IMG_3029For a second, it feels like autumn has arrived! The earthy and rich colors of edible flowers… Everything feels so smart tonight!

IMG_3033It’s not over yet! Ana also makes Banana ice cream to accompany her gorgeous pie. Nope. No  dairy in here! So clever how she makes this. Freeze couple Bananas and throw them in a food processor with bit of water added. That’s all you need to do. I guess you can add Vanilla, or even other fruits a bit in there? The secret is the banana itself. When it gets all meshed up, it got that perfect smooth ice cream texture. Delicious!

IMG_3032Ana mentioned there are good amount of beautiful raw dessert recipes out there. Ana, I forget the name of the book you showed me…!

IMG_3036Ana cutting it and Keith serving it!

IMG_3041

IMG_3038And Yes, that was So mine!  Delicious!!!

First, I like to thank you two, Ana and Keith for the wonderful food you made for me and for our friendship! I had a great time with you guys! And also I don’t know why we haven’t got together more in the past year. We can always meet for galleries or films, or over a simple cup of green tea. And I am totally going to make you guys some raw dishes I like to try! At the end, we have quite of raw food we eat daily or drink. Don’t we?  Any pickles or any salad, the fruit juice… Wraps, fresh corn on the cob as I like to eat them raw many times. We got some basic going on so I like to try some innovative dishes for us next time!  Thank you for teaching me to utilize all the great food sources out there! Raw is exciting!

Stay tuned! xx

IMG_2841Awesome Breezy Entrance at MoMA PS1.  Warm Up Ps1:  the Ultimate Summer Party for NYC!

I can’t believe it’s already the 14th year now MoMA PS1 is holding this music, dance, art installation that’s all happening in one gigantic outdoor party on Saturdays all summer long at this cool industrial area in Queens, NYC!!!  When we all heard then MoMA was branching out a sister MoMA out to Queens: PS1 taking over formal Public School #1 on Queens, We all were bit skeptical even though there are a few prominent Art and Design institutional places like Noguchi museum in the same neighbor hood.  \It felt bit out of the way compare to the mail one is on posh and touristy uptown in Manhattan. But PS1 had proved that was only a worry that we didn’t have to have at all after all. PS1 now has grown into a proud and even more rebellious and interesting little yet not so little sister of MoMA fueling Powerful Energy of New and Young Generation of Cool NYC peeps. And  maybe even of the “World” as you will be surprised to see and hear how many international visitors at not just “Warm” but maybe more of “Hot” summer Dance parties that PS 1 is housing year after year.  Every year PS1 holds a competition to design and doll up their envious grand schemed concrete and grabbled awesomely modern yard, and I personally like to thank to MomA doing this so as this is an absolutely a brilliant idea and also a another definite reason what attracts me and sure all other visitors to go visit PS1 as the yearly brand new Summer installation is something that you must not miss.

This year’s simple yet breezy and green installation is another winner that you want to see and I highly recommend the actual exhibitions that are going on in this beautiful formal public school space as it’s filled with much entertaining (I rather like to call it entertaining! ) Rayan Trecartin’s Any Ever : the short film series, and my absolute favorite of all, a screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s The Holy Mountain ( the screening ends on July 24th) which I ended up buying the DVD at the bookstore is another one you should not miss!!

The Warm Up Summer party at PS1 runs until the September 3rd with various DJS from around the world, So you haven’t missed much but certain exhibitions will do end at certain point, so if you are not sure what to do on Saturdays, pS1 Warm up party will be the perfect thing to do for this entire summer!

Now I like to share some pics from my visit to PS 1 Warm Up party this Saturday, July 16!

IMG_2840Yes the kid are welcome, but if you like to bring your little ones go early and live early. It get’s bit intense for the little ones later on. The party hour is 2-9 pm.

IMG_2511The young Italian at Sunset Cafe, Marina di Pisa, Italy

“Aperitivo” in Italy is one loaded  word  which describes layers of Italian culture in only 8 letters.  Relaxed mind, food and socializing. “Happy Hour” wouldn’t quite justify what Aperitivo does. People take time on Aperitivo. Especially the Young Italian. You will go to dinner after but you get to nibble on some real good appetizers.  All the local places will serve nice range of complimentary snacks along your order of drinks. Mostly like in a buffet style. They will serve all sort of things like riso freddo (rice salad), pastas, dips and cheese, olives, fruits, nuts and even cold cuts if you are in better places.  So actually drinks come bit more expensive but you also get great deal of nice nibbles.

But this is not the only reason why Aperitivo works differently from Happy Hour.  I think it’s the mind set. The mentality. Peace in your mind. Aperitivo is a Nice Stylish Break after a long day at work or even all day of playing at the beach if it happens to be the nice hot summer weekend.  You have taken a refreshing shower already and put on a clean outfit after the day of whatever that was and you step out of the house with recharged body and soul. And you are ready to mingle now. A sweet one. You meet up and plan for the dinner or even for the night or whatever next thing is. You catch up sipping on glass of prosecco or delicious cocktails with friends and family. It’s really a nice time. Life feels real good here. There will be good music there some times even the live one.  Any hot new Aperitivo spot is a definitely a good deal to talk about.

Especially when it comes to one just like the ” Sunset Cafe”  in Marina di Pisa!

IMG_1232250 steps of Escadaria Selaron, connecting Santa Teresa and Lapa, Rio de Janerio

Oh it was so not easy to find these steps covered in all sort of colored tiles as it’s tucked in between hill top of Santa Teresa and the small side street next to aqueduct at Lapa.  Steps are covered in mainly yellow, green and red as the Artist calls the red portion is his “personal problem” which he did not explain why but you and I can understand the reasons behind the yellow and green. See I totally remember watching the music video, “Beautiful” of Snoop Dogg featuring Pharell cheerfully singing on these steps and fearlessly cruising Favelas and Copacabana with hot Brazilian ladies, and I used to say to myself, if I go to Rio then I’ll go see that steps!  and Here I am finally at the top and the bottom of the very famous steps, Escadaria Selaron!!!

So here, Watch this!

IMG_1186The very first step on the top looking down. See you would not expect to see the grand colorful view just yet. You can only see it by looking up!

The Chilean born artist Jorge Selaron began renovating a dilapidated steps that ran along the front of his house back in 1990.  It started as his side project along his painting but this soon became the main project and real passion still continuing till today and he claims to do so until he dies. There are many tiles were sent or given to the artist from people around the world for him to add on within his own tile work. You can see small individual tiles designed with names of cities such NYC as well.

Here, I’ll lead you step by step!

IMG_1187The first top portion of the steps.

IMG_1240Getting closer to the bottom of the steps. It get’s more elaborate.  See I think it is good to start from the top. So you don’t have to walk up that 250 steps! Get there through Santa Teresa Convent form Santa Teresa rather than from Lapa.

IMG_1245One more pic with the very man, Jorge Selaron. Yes all of this work is done by him!

IMG_1249Here’s the manifesto of Mr. Selaron about the steps.

IMG_1250

IMG_1251

If you are ever in Rio, You can’t miss this.

It’s one big color result of one small artist’s passion that is recognized internationally!

Viva, Escadaria Selaron!!

ipanemaIpanema  Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Ahhh, I so wished it was warmer, no actually really hotter!  See Brazil right now is in winter even though it’s around 65-70 degrees, it just does not do the justice of hot hot sun slowly baking you to the sexy glowing golden goddess in bright fun bikinis!  But we were lucky on Sunday to have descent temperature and lovely sun caressing the city, it was the best day to hit the actual Ipanema beach and markets for a day!

The word “Ipanema” comes from “Tupi Language” which means “Bad water” and what it really means in this case is bad water for fishing since the surf dies too close to the sand that it pushes the fish away.  The surf can reach up to high as 9ft in winter time, Ipanema beach is filled with surfers as well as many volley ball & soccer players and also was packed with many Cariocas strolling, running and roller blading along the beautiful and famous mosaic tiled board walk enjoying beautiful Sunday afternoon. Ipanema belongs to the safest area called ” Zona Sul” in Rio and  I totally felt it was quite safe and neighborhood like with smaller streets and colorful homes with couple markets like Fiera Hippie on Sundays and everyday vegetables and fish market called Fiera Ipanema where there are many  small boutiques and typical Carioca style easy restaurants are.   Cynthia and I had walked everywhere to hunt down good images, colors and some good artisanal props and anything that could be great inspiration for our work for Summer 12!

IMG_1306

IMG_1304

IMG_1307Through out the city, You sill see much of these Mosaic tile work for pedestrian side walks to walls to these major beach like Ipanema and Copacabana. Copacabana’s tile work carries more of big wave like pattern which actually I personally prefer. Quite cool, Ha?

IMG_1328We did NOT see Gisele Bundchen. Or some sort of Rio beauties At ALL this time!! Is it because the weather is not hot as their summer which is more from December to March, the temperature reaches around to 86-87 degrees.  Actually I am convinced that those hot Brazilian babes are not form Rio. Maybe from Sao Paolo vacationing in Rio? Or are they all hiding…?

IMG_0797

IMG_0798

IMG_0964OK we are starving and stopping for some typical Carioca food at one of these restaurants by the board walk. I did order this fizzy drink ( non alcoholic drink made by Brazilian Coca Cola company and heard there are many versions including ones you make at home to bars…).  I did hear about ‘ Guarana’, this sort of thing that gives you energy. Guarana is a small bright red fruit that contains lots of Caffeine. (about double of coffee beans).  The taste?  This particular drink right here, Kuat! just tasted like sweet syrupy water with very light fizz in it. I did not care for it much. It didn’t feel like it made me all energetic either. but it sure gave me stomach upset!!!  It got me all nauseous!

IMG_0965My order. Rice with mixed sea food in tomato coconut milk sauce. Delicious!  But I have to tell you, one called ” Moqueca soup” at long time NY restaurant on Union square, ” The Coffee shop” makes the best one so far I have to say. Is that why we live in NYC?  Cynthia, you still don’t believe me about this, but they serve the best kind!  I have to say I loved the addition of this hard boiled egg in this dish. You know it’s just so comforting with nice sauce over it with rice… YUM!

IMG_0966Cynthia’s dish. Broiled Cod with fresh fried chips with garlic oil and crumbled hard boiled egg! Com on, You have to love this!  Sooo good! Don;t you love her red nail against bright neon strip eon back drop anyway?

IMG_0803One of residential building in Ipanema and the typical yellow cab of Rio.

IMG_1264Now we are at the Hippie market in Ipanema, Only a couple blocks into the town from the Gay beach area of Ipanema beach. Every Sunday. We totally learnt that Rio is an expensive city.  This hand made artisanal pieces are quite expensive and also everything else. Taxi, drink, food, clothing… Everything id quite expensive especially if you are brining the US $$. ( the exchange rate is terrible now)

IMG_1288There were couple food stands that run by these lovely Bahian ladies. Bahia is located on north east side of Brazil which is definitely above the Rio. All those good Samba and Bossa Nova was also born in Bahia.  Ahh we didn’t really taste any food here as we just ate!  But it must be really good and authentic as the stands were really crowded. Next time!

Rio_de_Janeiro_MapAn easy map of Rio de Janeiro for you. Today, we were at Santa Teresa, our home base and at Saara market in Downtown.

The most used One word in Rio today?  “Obrigado!” Then my poor tongue would keep spitting out ”Gracias!” or “ Grazie!” and what else.. Oh I even said, “Arigato!” Actually If didn’t say “Arigato!” that loud stupidly, I could have been almost heard as if I was saying ”Obrigado…!”
But gentile Cariocas were still friendly to us as we pulled out every possible language card we had out of our back pockets, and we did survive the very first day at this warm, raw, lush and quite interesting city, Rio de Janeiro!  ( yeah… Italian did help but not much really…)

From a little quick research I did before booking the trip, I knew we wanted to stay at Santa Teresa where is located between the heart of Samba scene area called “Lapa” and an another area where the old Rio meets the new Rio, a downtown typically named as “Centro”. See, Santa Teresa is sort of Montmarte of Rio to me.  Run down yet absolutely gorgeous colonial style villas with those pretty metal gates are lined up all along the sleepy cobble stoned hill tops and this quiet bohemian, and artists filled neighborhood houses small bodegas and charming little bars where you can taste authentic Brazilian or more like Amazonian food seasoned with exotic Brazilian nuts and herbs along the superb Caipirinha that is just perfectly prepared!

Then you will also find more than enough of quite amazing graffitied walls and maybe the last true Tram in the entire South America, the Bonde ( it pronounces “bonje”).  This bright yellow old school Tram is a little moving gem that provides you maybe the best transportation to access to Lapa and Centro with only 0.60 Real ( about $0.45) per ride or even for free if you dare to hang on to the bar outside the tram windows!  Me an Cynthia will try this tomorrow morning when we get down to Downtown to get to Ipanema Beach and Leblon to hunt down good inspirations and ideas for the next summer’s Gap women’s collection.

Today we had gone down to check out The “ Saara Market” in Centro, the traditional downtown shopping bazaar with bustling streets and hundreds of shops where you can buy stuff like Carnival costumes to batteries. It’s down and true to all that chachiki needs for everyday life of Cariocas ( Local of Rio). The streets of Saara consist of historical architecture, randomly located many churches and bustling people crossing the street regardless the color of the traffic lights ( I mean way more intense than NYC) and you can surely feel like you are in the heart of where the locals really hang out.

And…let me share some pics!

IMG_0486I tried to find the best option in our budget to really experience what Rio truly is about. We passed many swanky high rise hotels in the beaches and chose a small guest house in Santa Teresa. A sun room at Casa Amarelo.
