MOD rules: Northern Spain’s Mod Movement, Gij’on Euroyeye’ Festival
Filed Under Events, Fashion, Music, Travel | Leave a Comment
Even though the roots of the mod movement are a British as the queen, cream teas and holidays in the Beindorm, it has come a long way since the early 60’s, when those first mods got into fights with rockers in British coastal towns like Brighton and Margate. This community in northern Spain consists of 21st century mods, who are faithful to the look and the tastes of the mods of old.
Mod is short for Modernism, a term originally applied to fans of modern jazz, as opposed to traditional jazz. London and Brighton were the places where a blend of music, night life, fashion and scooters became a way of life. Although the mod scene was eclipsed by hippy psyche-delis st the end of the 60’s, it made a strong come back a decade later.
Inspired by this musical heritage, the 3 friends from Gij’on had started Euroyeye’ (music popular during the 1960s in France and Spain is known as ye’ ye’)in 1994 for the first time with only 4 groups performing, but over the years it has become one of the word’s premier mod festivals. People will come from all over to buy stuffs at the market, to see films and exhibitions and to listen to groups they like. Check out www.euroyeye.es
Mods say modern technology helps today’s mods to maintain that impeccable style. Like eBay. Or they would be tailored by dressmakers. It’s like you know certain steps in your dance to the certain music, and it’s that certain cut of the collar and turn-up of your trousers. It’s all in the detail.

Peggy Guggenheim, Venice

Guggenheim Venice is located on beautiful Grand Canal of Venice. The low white palazzo in the middle is the Peggy Guggenheim Museum.
Venice has been all about Art for us this time. Biennale and also the Peggy Guggenheim. The Guggenheim in Venice is in so much more intimate setting than one in NY. http://www.guggenheim.org/venice
Shortly after Peggy herself Art collection was shown for the first time at the 1948 Venice Biennale,( Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothoko and Arshile Gorky), she purchased the palazzo Venier dei Leoni, on the Grand Canal of Venice , where she became to live for the next 30 years. And from 1951, Peggy had opened up her home to the public for every summer to show her personal Art collection. There are still her dinning table and the chairs there and also her beautiful iron bead head that was made by one of my favorite artist Calder.
This is such a humble entrance compare to her impressive and most exquisite Art collection. The Cubism, Surrealism to Abstraction Expressionism. Her amazing taste and eyes for colors, lines and the power of paintings, sculptures and her passion to discover and grow the talented artists! She was in a way “The Pimp ” and ” The Mother” of undiscovered genius Artists in that time. She would find them and encourage them and literally feed and give them places to sleep. So they could work. They could work under her commissions.
Metal sculpture and digital water fall installation greets visitors at her back garden.
Terrace out to Grand Canal. I just can imagine all those big artists like Duchamp, Pollock or Brancusi getting off the Gondolas and taking steps up to the Terrace for her most artistic parties… I see her in this most eccentric outfits with all her intellectual conversations with biggest artists of the history. Ah I so wish I was there….

Peggy!! ” Buy 1 painting a day”, What a woman!
Peggy died aged 81 in1979. Her ash is buried in a corner of the garden of Palazzo Venier, then home and now the museum converted by the Guggenheim Foundation after her death.
The museum experience was fulfilling and enlightening. It was absolutely just.. can’t find the word…!
Oh so crazy: Virus X Life

So after the long day of walk through the Biennale, we had to have a little power nap to go on for the evening. We had planned to go to a concert , 4 seasons by Vivaldi at this old church, San Vidal. And we slept bit too much so we are rushing through the small streets along the canals up and down and we are point to breaking a sweat. We are in such a brisk walk but I have these invisible eyes wrapping around my head keep checking things out every corner of the street. And I saw it by 2 seconds passing through. After the beautiful Vivaldi, I had to stop by this shop again. Crazy. It’s strange. It’s full of these things are all out of ordinary.
This is neon lighted toilette bowl building with a court yard well with men urinating into it.
So it’s a clothing shop filled with Goth meets Hippie, Dark spirit and everything you can imagine. I see Mick Jagger buying some crazy jackets here and rock it no matter what. They are, wow, expensive. All are one of kind and hand made with patches, hand painted and all.
The best of all, their business hour.
