Walking Bitonto, Puglia: Il Fornoantico
Filed Under Food, Italy 2009, Travel | Leave a Comment
This Fornaio ( Oven baking shop) is about 800 years old. Yes 800 years old. Pizza, Focaccia, Taralucci ( a baked dough with olive oil that’s shaped into a small to bigger ring. And they are AMAZING! Perfect crusts around the edges and wooz of absolutely delicious warm and nurturing olive oil in your mouth with every bite! Our good friend Tania has joined us from Bath in England for this truly magical trip in Puglia. Tania walking into the place.
The 800 year old oven. The wood logs are the source of the heat but they are underneath of the oven not inside of the oven. This is truly the heart of this place.

Inside the oven. The oven is about 30ft in diameter.

Never ending fields of ancient olive trees, architecture that varies from medioeval to Baroccan with highilights of Trulli and Masserie, typical buildings that you will find only here, and of course the sea, the adriatic to the east and the Ionio to the west, this is only a pinch of what we have seen in Puglia thanks to our friend Beppe that took us around his beautiful land, grazie Beppe!!

One of 21 churches of Bitonto. This one has strong influence of Spanish style.

Near the main port of Livorno, there are these small canals that just remind Venezia in north of Italy and Livornese don’t let this get by. The canal area is literally called Venezia and every first week of August, the Venice of Livorno comes to a life with elaborate festival around food, art performance, antique markets, street food vendors and restaurants, exhibitions and boat riding along the canals and other many exciting things.

These are a few of my favorite things.

This was from the antique market of Lucca in Italy. These come as a pair from early 1800. These were for Unione Militare Roma.

Back side of it. You see the flat hook to clip and a screw to apply it to the shoulder of a military jacket. I always fancy to wear these or just one on one day out.

Some of you have seen this on me. I had bought this at “Kapital” in Ebisu of Tokyo in May. Pretty much Masai inspired. The stripe jersey bead like strings mimicking necklaces are attached to the back neck of the shirt. It’s awesome. I had re worked the neck line lower though.

This is what I mean by a cool T. It is a signature T hanging in the shop. I better frame this baby before it turns into a dust one day.

It says ALIGN.
One day I’m re producing this!

$1 .00 from a Stoop Sale
It was too tall on me anyway. I’m reducing the height of it.
I put them back together but I tilted the front so it has more attitude. And I like how the rim sticks out bit taller around. Just simple a needle and thread.
I decided to do something interesting with it’s own part. I started cutting the rim around it.
Keep cutting.
Playing around with it.
To be continued…
